This Is Why Your Hair Is Turning Brassy
You may have heard this before, but I want to gently remind you: when lightening your hair color, it naturally progresses through red, orange, and yellow tones. Unfortunately, there aren't any caramel browns or honey blondes hidden underneath your natural color. This is why we always tone your hair after removing the foils and rinsing off the lightener.
As a hairstylist, we formulate toners to help neutralize those unwanted warm hues and create a color formulation that better matches your desired shade—whether it's a hue that complements your skin tone or resembles the Pinterest inspiration you shared with us.
Since our hair naturally lifts to these brassy tones, it's important to schedule a toner appointment every 6-8 weeks. This is when the toner starts to fade and the brassy tones begin to show through.
In between visits, you can use a purple shampoo, which I highly recommend for anyone with highlighted hair. While not as strong as a toner, purple shampoo helps maintain a more desirable tone at home.
To avoid feeling brassy, plan for a toner appointment every 6-8 weeks and use a purple shampoo at least once a week in between.
